You really can learn how to become an empathic & embodied listener.

As statistics on loneliness and mental health issues continue to rise, equipping ordinary people to listen and lovingly hold space for a person’s story has never been more important.

Developed by a seasoned counselor and counselor educator, this training combines evidence-based listening skills with fresh and relevant findings from biopsychosocial research and plenty of time to practice in groups of three.

Our Approach 

Attuned Listener Training – Level 1

This is an 8-week training designed to help participants understand the importance of connecting more deeply and engaging the stories of those around us. We do this by integrating key biopsychosocial spiritual findings and teaching proven listening skills which together foster deep insight, growth, connection and even healing in others. Both rest on a foundation of Christian truths & principles that underscore our inherent desire to be seen and known in relationship.

The 2-hour class session is made up of three key components:

  • discussion around the weekly pre-class video module delivered digitally for you to view on your own time

  • explanation and demonstration of the next listening skill

  • triadic practice where participants practice skills in a small group by engaging one another’s stories

Fee: We do have a REGISTRATION FEE of $50 which will cover the manual and platform fees. We will happily adjust or waive this fee if you are unable to pay this amount. We also have a suggested CLASS FEE of $200 but is payable only if you are able. We ask no questions because we want more listeners out there!

Location: IN PERSON beginning the week of September 23rd to week of November 11th. BLACK MOUNTAIN/SWANNANOA.

Date/Time: Begins Tuesday, September 23rd from 7-9pm at Valley Hope Church in Swannanoa. The class will run for 8 weeks in a row, finishing on Tuesday, November 19th.

Experience or Background: No previous training or experience is required. Just a willingness to lean in and learn. Please Note: While the 8-week training is faith-based, ANYONE is welcome to attend. Attuned Listener Training – Level 2* (ELT-2) will further equip listeners to move through the rhythm of a full 50-minute meeting, engage more intentionally with the story being told and facilitate goal formation. Listeners will also learn practical, ethical strategies and protocols to implement if a speaker expresses suicidal thoughts, reports abuse or domestic violence, or displays heightened anxiety, agitation, or anger. This training is designed to be 4 weeks in length or condensed into an intensive format over 2-3 days.

*Attendance at 10 of 12 ELT-1 sessions is a prerequisite for ELT-2. This course is required for anyone to volunteer as a SoulWell Listener at The SoulWell Center.
